Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center
The center features exhibits of Douglas County history, the Basque and Washoe peoples, natural history, early printing and historic telephones. Central Nevada Museum & Historical Society
This museum has an extensive collection of 2,700 historic maps and blueprint drawings. The collection contains maps of historic mines throughout central Nevada, including Tonopah, Goldfield, Rhyolite, Beatty and Round Mountain. In addition to mining maps there are also current and historic editions of United States Geological Survey's topographic, general highway maps, townsite maps and aerial photographs. The society has also a large collection of photographs, manuscripts, newspapers and books. Located at 1900 Logan Field Road, Tonopah. Hours: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Children's Museum of Northern Nevada
Exhibits at the museum include model trains, the Sound Machine, a Body Print exhibit, a Reaction Time machine and Musical Hands. There is an emergency room exhibit, a toddler area with Lego table and Fisher Price toys, a dress-up area, a Smith's Grocery Store and a castle of mirrors. The museum has a walking piano, a shadow room, the Paul Bunyan kaleidoscope and an Under-the-Sea Reading Room. Located at 813 N. Carson St., Carson City. Churchill County Museum
Exhibits include a display on the Newlands Irrigation Project, the first reclamation project of its kind nationally. Other exhibits show American Indian life at the Stillwater marsh and pioneer life. On the second and fourth Saturday of each month, the Bureau of Land Management guides a free tour inside Hidden Cave. Meet at the museum at 9:30 a.m. Located at 1050 S. Maine St., Fallon. Gatekeeper's and Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum
Pine needle basketry classes take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 25 and July 20. All materials provided. Cost: $25 per class. Call museum to register. The museum features a display of photos from the 1916 Lake Tahoe Shore Line Survey and over 800 Native American baskets, artifacts and pottery from over 85 tribes. Located at 130 W. Historic Fourth Ward School Museum and Cultural Center
Currently on display is the exhibit "On Silver Mountain: Expectations and Realities of Chinese Americans in Virginia City." Built in 1876, the school houses permanent and changing exhibits featuring the history and culture of the Comstock. A variety of workshops and performing art series offered throughout the season. Kidzone Museum
Showing at the museum is the exhibit "Five Senses" featuring a human kaleidoscope, optical illusions, touch boxes and smell tables. The museum also has a child-size bakery, an infant crawler area, a grocery store exhibit, a water play area, the Brio train table, a covered wagon, a puppet theater and crafts. Mackay Mansion
Tours are available of the oldest mansion in Virginia City build in the 1860s. Contains the original furnishings, pieces from the Mackay silver collection, an acre of gardens and the first working bathroom on the Comstock. Marshall Mint and Museum
The museum features a private mineral collection that includes gold specimens from the Comstock and other Nevada and California mining areas, as well as a collection of gem crystals from around the world. National Automobile Museum, The Harrah Collection
The Artown celebration features "This Time it's Hudson" features cars by the Hudson Motor Car Company on display through Sept. 26. "DeSotos, Dames & Dudes: Divorce Reno-Style" presents the history of divorce in Nevada through Oct. 3. Automobiles at the museum include James Dean's '49 Merc and Elvis' '73 Cadillac, along with more than 220 cars reflecting different eras of American history from horseless carriages to modern racecars. The museum's library, though not open to the public, can be accessed for renovation information on old cars for a $15 fee. "Wally's World: The Loneliest Art Collection in Nevada" is on display through Sept. 24. The museum has American Indian baskets and gaming artifacts. The museum houses the original Nevada Constitution, a 44-page document approved by President Abraham Lincoln on Oct. 31, 1864. The video program "Battle Born," highlighting Nevada's admission to the Union during the Civil War, is in the exhibit gallery. The Nevada Women's History Project has a free monthly lecture series. The Books and Butterflies Summer Celebration is from 1-2 p.m. June 25. "The Sagebrush Ocean: A Naturalist's Vision of the Great Basin" photography exhibit by Stephen Trimble shows through Aug. 21. The "Under One Sky" exhibit includes artifacts, theater programs and dioramas highlighting Nevada's American Indian heritage. Featured at the museum is a ghost town, a mine replica, videos on the history of the mint and plate tectonics, the John Orr gold nugget and a large Black Rock mammoth skeleton. Nevada State Railroad Museum
Pen and ink illustrations in the exhibit "Shadows of the V & T" by Loren Jahn are on display through September. The exhibit "Tireless and Unremitting: The Chinese and Nevada's Railroads" is on display. The museum has more than 60 pieces of historic railroad equipment and other train items, including steam locomotives, passenger coaches and freight engines. The Tahoe Traditional Arts and Culture Photo Exhibit featuring images of Washoe baskets, Ukrainian egg decorations, Cuban flamenco dancers, Austrian and Hungarian decorative arts is on display through Sept. 12 with art demonstrations from 2-4 p.m. June 26. W. M. Keck Museum
The museum boasts the largest collection of rocks, minerals, ore deposits and fossils in the state. Specimens come from around the world. Wilbur D. May Museum and Arboretum
The life of Wilbur D. May is presented in a video and history room. Artifacts collected from his travels through Europe, Asia and Africa are showcased. The museum's north wing is home to traveling exhibits and features the garden court with waterfalls, koi ponds and tropical plants.
